Green Apprenticeships

Green or Clean Energy Apprenticeships is a steadily growing sector with demand that only promises to increase in the future.

Two categories can be used to group green apprenticeships:

1. Apprentices who are only engaged in renewable, sustainable practices-focused initiatives. These could include clean energy sources like wind or solar farms, large construction projects like hydroelectric facilities, and the creation and maintenance of hybrid electric vehicles.

2. Apprentices who need new skills to shift to and maintain new technology and work practices that improve sustainability but are employed in conventional industries like farming and agricultural or general electrical.

The Australian Government offers a New Energy Apprentice Support Payment which provides up to $10,000 for eligible apprentices.

Around 40 occupations identified on the Australian Apprenticeships Priority List may be eligible for this funding, designed to support apprentices during their training and create a pipeline of clean energy workers.

These occupations include the following trade specialisations:

• Electrician Apprenticeship
• Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Apprenticeship
• Fitter and Turner Apprenticeship
• Sheetmetal Apprenticeship
• Instrumentation and Control Apprenticeship
• Data and Voice Communications Apprenticeship
• Automotive Electrician Apprenticeship

Eligibility is based on the qualification studied as part of the Australian Apprenticeship being listed on the Government's Priority List, AND the host employer being in the clean energy sector with most of the apprentice's hands-on training having a clean energy focus.

Up to $10,000 is available to each eligible full-time apprentice, made up of $2,000 per year of training and upon completion of the Australian Apprenticeship.

There are new apprenticeship training pathways becoming available, providing both new and completed apprentices with job opportunities in the green energy space.

Workers who have previously completed apprenticeships in traditional trades such as electrical, automotive mechanical (heavy and light vehicle) and civil construction can upskill to equip themselves to work in clean energy industries.

New apprentices will be able to undertake a range of government approved “new energy” qualifications designed for clean energy occupations.
